Artist Lecture

Although I don’t fully understand painting or prefer it as a medium, I was able to apply Glen Cebulash’s artist lecture to the areas of art I know well. Glen spoke about his difficulties, inspirations, and ideologies with painting, that I found relatable to my experiences with art.

Glen started off the lecture stating that there was an implied theory within his paintings; however, it only really matters to him. I found this holds true to all aspects of art. I have taken photographs that made me feel something and that were for my benefit only. I was unsure of how it was being translated through to my audience; however, I didn’t care for those photos evoked something within myself and that was my theory.

Glen beautifully stated that the importance of painting is knowing not what to represent, but how. I always struggled with this in my photography. My teacher and I had a conversation about my artwork and what I was representing. He explained how I know what I want to represent and my idea is concise, but it was too blunt. I was screaming what I believed in the audiences’ face, rather than leaving it up to them for interpretation or realization.

Glen also mentions a time in his art career in which he obtained “a certain exhaustion” and felt as though he had run out of things to say. This was pivotal for me, for I have just recently became tired of my work. I would like to go beyond making controversial or somewhat shocking photographs and dig deeper within myself. I keep finding myself searching for a new inspiration and reevaluating my photography as a whole.

Cebulash also mentioned something that I found true for photography as well. He stated “Sometimes you don’t know what you’re interested in, just what you’re not.” This triggered my memory from in class when I didn’t understand the architectural style of photography. I am not sure why, I just know that I have no interest in it. The way I take the best photographs is when I carry my camera everywhere; I am then able to capture a moment that I am interested in.

Lately I have been working with large format cameras that require a lot of time and patience when capturing a photo. You have more time to become familiar with a place than when using a digital camera. Glen Cebulash also took the time to immerse himself within a place. In the beginning of his career when he was still painting landscapes, he would see something that gave him a spark, sit down, and finish an entire painting. I am sure this required patience and precision, similar to that of a 4x5 photo, for you only have one chance to get it right.

I am glad I decided to attend an artist lecture from a painter. I think I left with a new understanding and appreciation for the medium. I also found some universal truths within art and discovered all art is connected.
